Parents of Horsley School prepared a traditional Christmas lunch for 107 children today. There were crackers, party hats, turkey with all the trimmings and a mince pie for every child. The whole school sang 'We Wish you a Merry Christmas' as a thank you, and the parents then sat down for their own well-deserved lunch. Many thanks to Anna and all her helpers for once again providing this wonderful occasion for children and staff.
We always look forward to the infant Christmas play, one of the highlights of the school year. This year was no exception. A combination of joyful singing, super costumes, groovy dance moves, quiet thoughtful moments and of course, funny moments - whether intended or not - all led to a very memorable performance. A real success, well done to Reception, Y1 and Y2!
These were the words from the opening song, enthusiastically performed by the whole school in full voice. With two confident solo musicians, a dance based on Handa's Surprise, plenty of song and some moving poetry and prayers, the children reminded us of how grateful we are for this important time of year. Harvest was traditionally celebrated with the sharing of tasty bread, together with a beautiful plaited loaf forming the centre piece of the produce display. The food will be distributed to the pensioners in the village by Otters Class on Monday, with the remainder being donated to the Stroud Food Bank. The church was jam packed with supportive parents and grandparents. Thanks to Hobbs House for donating the bread and all the children for a wonderful celebration.

This will be useful if you wish to help your child with their learning in a specific area. The Y6 buddies introduced the new reception children in assembly today. There are 16 of them and they have already learnt the actions to the new school vision - Nurturing, to Grow and Thrive. We would like to wish all the YR children the best of luck with their first few weeks in school. We hope they will be very happy at Horsley.
A wet and windy sports day showed the children in their true colours this afternoon; well in red, blue and yellow to be precise. Taking part in fast sprints, long distance, slow bicycle, traditional sack, egg and spoon, bat and ball, football dribble, late to school and skipping races, the teams fought long and hard with every child competing and trying their best. Apart from two gazebos that blew away, sports day passed without mishap, there were plenty of windswept and damp parents cheering their children on from the sidelines! The three teams were very close but in the end the Blues pulled ahead winning by 45 points. The cup was awarded to the proud team captains, with their team leading the traditional champions' circuit, closely followed by the reds and yellows.
Sponsor forms completed, running shoes on and water bottles at the ready saw the start of Horsley's Race for Life. Raising money for Cancer Research, the older children were led on a cross country course through the woods by olympic athlete, Dan Robinson whilst the younger pupils ran around a large coned course on the village field. Many demonstrated tremendous stamina and perseverance and just kept going despite the warm weather. All were awarded a well-deserved medal for taking part within a terrific atmosphere of achievement and a lot of fun. Well done sporty children!
This week has provided a great opportunity for cross cultural discussion and learning. Visitors from our Indian School have been in and out of classrooms all week, sharing customs and taking part in lessons. We had an interesting question and answer session with Owls class today, with questions like 'What is the national sport of India?', 'Do you have earthquakes and tsunamis?' and 'Do you like Britain and our school?' When asked if the children would like to visit India, the overwhelming response was 'YES!'. We will continue with this brilliant project, with planned collaborative activities in every class over the next two years. We would like to thank the British Council for their generous funding through the Connecting Classrooms award.
