Sports Funding

The government provides additional funding to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding is provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport. It is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools. At Horsley, we receive £8520 per year and the money is used to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sports provision. We are therefore able to provide the following:
  • High quality teaching of PE
  • High levels of achievement in weekly PE lessons
  • A large variety of sports being offered
  • Excellent equipment for sports activities
  • Increased participation in competitive sports against other schools
  • Increased quantity of intra-school events
  • Increased number and variety of sports clubs available for pupils
  • A greater emphasis on pupils’ personal health and well-being

By undertaking a comprehensive audit of current practice, we address key priorities through a detailed action plan. The PE subject leader, PE governor, SLT, and an external PE specialist are involved in auditing practice annually and setting goals for the following year. This document enables us to further improve our provision and accurately measures the impact of our actions. Areas considered to date include:

  • Assessing staff confidence and competence in teaching PE through a questionnaire
  • Viewing current achievement and progress in a variety of sports (including percentage on track or above national expectations
  • Identifying participation rates in extra curricular clubs, intra-school and inter-school competitions. This is broken down by age, gender and disability.
  • Researching links to local, county and national sporting organisations and clubs that enhance learning and performance.
  • Looking at how we promote sport and celebrate sporting achievements, and what those achievements have been recently
  • Pupil conferencing to establish our pupils' views about PE and sports provision at school
  • Looking at our scheme of work in terms of balance and breadth across PE
