The Creative Arts

The ‘Creative Arts’ play a central role in the life of the school and village. In recognition of our commitment to the arts, Horsley was awarded the prestigious Arts Council England award – Artsmark Gold for the third time in 2008. The school also has hosted ‘Big Draw’ events gaining runner-up in the prestigious national ‘Design Inspiration Awards’. We are fortunate to have many distinguished artists, writers and musicians living around Horsley to provide inspiration for our work in school. We believe children’s work in these areas should be valued, and seek to provide opportunities to develop the powers of artistic expression and appreciation which will enrich their lives. We regularly welcome artists into school.

Art

Children are given opportunities to observe and record accurately, using line and colour selectively. They explore and experiment with a wide range of materials and techniques to develop their imaginations. Children are also introduced to the work of great artists and craftsmen from a variety of cultures, and through this develop an appreciation of the world of art.

Music and Drama

Music is a valuable part of school life at Horsley and is enjoyed by children of all ability levels. The curriculum covers the four strands of music: performing, composing, transcribing and describing. Through the teaching of music children are encouraged to develop their understanding and appreciation of a wide range of different kinds of music. They explore ideas of music making with our range of tuned and untuned instruments.

There are many opportunities for children to learn instruments such as recorder, violin, flute, clarinet, saxophone, drums and keyboard, with tuition by external music teachers. The musicians regularly perform in assemblies and school events. We also have music clubs on offer, such as singing for infants and rock choir for Y3 and above.

Details of termly fees and instrument hire are available from the office.

Drama takes place within class activities, as well as in production of plays, concerts and assemblies. We pride ourselves on our productions which are one of the highlights of the year for children, their parents and staff. Wherever possible we enrich this area by taking the children to theatres and inviting in touring companies.

Design and Technology

Children learn to identify a need in the world around them. They are encouraged to research, plan and then design a solution, before they build or make. They are given opportunities to work with materials and appropriate tools. By drawing on these skills and knowledge, children learn to appreciate the challenge of converting an idea into reality. For many of the making experiences children will work together in teams, evaluate their products and suggest possible improvements.
