The Horsley Curriculum
We provide children with a stimulating and well-balanced curriculum, carefully planned to ensure that children’s learning experiences develop their knowledge and skills. We provide as many practical opportunities as possible. We believe that a rich variety of experiences is important, with children taking increased responsibility as their maturity and understanding grows.
Learning objectives are structured to extend each child’s understanding by introducing appropriate challenges, through a combination of individual, paired, group and whole class activities. Our aim is to develop independent learners by the time children leave our school.
At the beginning of each term, parents receive a synopsis of the work to be covered. We call these the topic webs. These are carefully planned to deliver on all areas of the national curriculum. We make the learning exciting, memorable and fun by teaching the subjects through an engaging topic that appeals to the children at their particular age.
In the reception class children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, which provides plenty of play experiences and a link from nursery or playgroup to the full curriculum in year 1.
From the age of five, all children follow the National Curriculum in :
English, Maths, Science, Computing, PE, Religious Education , Geography, History, Art, Design and Technology, Music, and French for juniors. We also follow a programme of Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE). Priority is given to the core subjects of English, Maths, Science and Computing. Click on the links below to obtain detailed information on each subject.
A two year rolling programme is used to ensure work is not repeated in a mixed-age class. The topic webs for the current term are available on the class pages, you can access them here.
Our Curriculum Drivers
Our drivers sit at the heart of the Horsley Curriculum. It is what we are passionate about for our children. These are the things that matter to us.
The Outdoors - we believe in experiential learning and finding out by doing and this may mean sometimes getting dirty!
Local - our school is located in a beautiful area of Gloucestershire, we use what is on our doorstep to enhance learning.
Values - the Christian values underpin teaching and learning at Horsley. Further details are below.
Looking out - as well as having a strong link with a school in Asia, we provide opportunities for finding out about contrasting localities and cultures to our own.
Horsley Church of England Primary School has a Christian foundation which promotes the highest standards through a rich, exciting and balanced curriculum for its pupils. Its ethos is underpinned by Christian values which, by experience and example, encourage children's spiritual and moral development.
